In 1904 Steinlen illustrated Leon Frapie's novel, La Maternelle (the "Nursery School").The book was so successful that in 1920 it was adapted for the stage and the author requested Steinlen to design a poster for the production. Steinlen depicts a flood of children. They are the same irresistible, waifish, destitute children he had been drawing for his whole career, appeared in countless magazine illustrations and other posters. Two versions of this poster exist, one with a light background and red lettering and one with a dark background and yellow lettering; this is the former version before text. Bargiel / Zagrodski 72 A2.
